Water in the Coastal Plain

North Carolina Coast in is the Atlantic Ocean. The sounds in NC are Currituck, Albemarle, Chowan, Roanoke, Pamlico, Core and Bogue. Between the sounds and the Atlantic Ocean is a low-lying ridge of sand which extends along most of the North Carolina coast and reaches for miles into the ocean, at many places being largely covered with water. The Coastal Plain is drained by six great rivers: the Chowan, Roanoke, Tar-Pamlico, Neuse, Trent and Cape Fear. These streams run in a southeasterly direction and all except the Cape Fear empty into the shallow sounds off the coast, tending to make them increasingly more shallow with sediment deposits. The Cape Fear flows directly into the Atlantic, but sediment deposited near its mouth forms Frying Pan Shoals which make a dangerous entrance.

North Carolina also has many beaches and piers. Some of the state parks include: Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Fisher State Park, Goose Creek State Park, and Cliffs of the Neuse Sate Park. The first successful sustained powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine were made here by Wilbur and Orville Wright on December 17, 1903. A 60-foot granite monument dedicated in 1932, is perched atop 90-foot tall Kill Devil Hill, NC commemorating the achievement of these two visionaries from Dayton, Ohio. The USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial is located in Wilmington. It can be visited and is a historic site in NC. The PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame will honor PGA members who have made significant contributions to the game of golf. This amzazing site is located in Pinehurst, NC. Since 1965 and up until 2005, the North Carolina Speedway hosted top races two weekends per year. The Rock as it's also known as, is a true driver's track. Also in this region, is the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, NC. It is a gorgeous garden that has many feautures including breath-taking fountains.
